Chapter 4 . Samue Looking for a Job
Amanda touched his arm and jumped back in fright, "Patrick... Patrick, what''s wrong with you? Someone... someone come quickly, Patrick is not okay."
"...." Was he critically ill or something? What did she mean by "not okay"? Did this girl even know how to talk?
Patrick felt exhausted.
Richard, who was bringing up food, had to carry Patrick back to his room.
Amanda''s intention was to bring him into her own room, take care of him all night, and maybe do something else. That way, their relationship would be solidified.
But Patrick was only pretending to faint, not really fainting, and he managed to get Richard to take him back to his own room by whispering in his ear.
As soon as he lay down, Amanda followed him in, holding an ice pack and a towel.
Patrick opened his eyes weakly and said, "Amanda, let Richard handle it. You go out first."
"Patrick, do you dislike me that much? Are you afraid I''ll do something to you?"
"I''m afraid you''ll get tired. Be good and go out. You know it''s inconvenient for me to take off my clothes and change my pants with you here, right?"
Patrick was clearly trying to draw a line with Amanda. Even if a girl had thick skin, she couldn''t stay in such a situation, and Amanda wasn''t shameless either.
If Patrick really had someone in his heart or was with someone, she wouldn''t cling to him. But she knew he didn''t have anyone in his heart and wasn''t with anyone. She liked him openly and honestly, so why couldn''t she?
Today, she had to get an answer.
"Patrick, be honest with me. Do you have someone in your heart? When I called you today, were you with her?"
Patrick didn''t know how much courage it took for Amanda to ask this question, only that their friendship was probably coming to an end.
His head was pounding, his forehead throbbing, and he steeled himself, "Yes, I have someone in my heart. I was with him today."
He wasn''t exactly lying. He did have someone named Samue in his heart, and he was indeed with him today.
Richard, who had gone out to get fever medicine, was so shocked that he shivered, and the medicine tray and water cup clattered to the floor.
"I... I didn''t mean to." Richard was at a loss.
"Patrick, you bastard. I must have been blind." Amanda, unable to save face, pushed Richard aside and ran out.
Richard was dumbfounded, "Patrick..."
"What are you standing there for? Hurry up and clean this up. Do you expect Patrick to do it himself while he''s sick?"
"Yes, yes, don''t worry. Every time you''re sick, it''s like you''re dying. Just lie down and rest." Richard hung his head and cleaned up the mess, then brought the medicine tray back in.
"Bring some food in, and then have Ralph keep an eye on Amanda to make sure nothing happens to her. You go downstairs and watch the place." Patrick propped himself up on his arm, still looking weak.
"Mr. Peabody, you''re in this state, so don''t worry about so much. I''ll handle Amanda. Just take your medicine, and I''ll bring you some food."
Richard''s full name was Richard Wright, and he had no relation to Ralph. Because they both had the last name Wu and Richard was bigger, he was called Richard. Together with Ralph, they were Mr. Peabody''s right-hand men.
During the many nights when Mr. Peabody was out and about, they took care of the bar and provided Mr. Peabody with a livelihood.
They were both friends and brothers, with an official boss-employee relationship, but most of the time, Richard seemed more like the boss than Patrick.
"Look at how you feel about Amanda..."
"Boss, you said it yourself today, so I''m not going to be polite. If you do or say anything you shouldn''t to Amanda, we might not be able to stay brothers." Richard interrupted Patrick, looking serious.
"Heh... you called me boss, so how can we be brothers?"
"Boss, I''m not joking. Tell me honestly, do you really have someone in your heart? Who is she? How does she compare to Amanda? Are you truly committed? Do you have any feelings left for Amanda?"
"No, you can rest assured. Amanda and I will never be together in this lifetime. But since we''re on this topic, if you do me a favor, I''ll tell you who I like."
Patrick lowered his eyelids to hide the mischievous glint in his eyes.
"What did you say you needed help with?"
"Are you sure you don''t want to think it over?"
"No, for my lifelong happiness, I''ll help with anything. Besides, I trust Mr. Peabody''s character enough to know he wouldn''t ask me to do anything illegal."
Wow, it seems like love hasn''t completely clouded his judgment. He still has some sense and can even play along with the tricks.
Patrick didn''t know whether to feel relieved or roll his eyes at him.
"Of course not. I''ll give you an address, and I need you to keep an eye on someone for me. See what he''s been up to lately, his daily routine, that sort of thing."
Richard looked at Patrick suspiciously. "Who is this person? Your significant other? Shouldn''t you be the one doing this?"
"If I weren''t sick, do you think I''d need you? Remember to take your truck; the air conditioning is good enough to prevent heatstroke."
"So that''s how you got sick?"
"You''re so smart. Now get lost and go find your Amanda."
Patrick blushed. For some reason, when Richard mentioned his significant other, his ears felt a bit hot. Maybe he was just feverish.
"Haha... I can leave, no problem. But Patrick, you have to tell me who this person is."
Patrick quickly pulled out his phone and showed a photo. It was clearly taken years ago, and it looked like it was a screenshot from some online forum, with poor resolution.
The person in the photo... or rather, the boy, had a pair of cute little fangs, a sunny and handsome face, and the typical look of a school heartthrob.
Richard, who had expected to see a stunning beauty, was startled to see a photo of a boy. "Wait, Patrick, you want me to follow your rival in love? This kid? If I were a girl, I wouldn''t even think twice about choosing you. You''re better looking and richer than him. What are you worried about?"
"Shut up. Just follow him and stop with the nonsense. If I can get up normally tomorrow, we''ll forget about it. If not, you need to find out his whereabouts for me. Got it?"
Patrick didn''t bother to explain. It was still too early to say anything, and if Samue were a girl, it would be simple. But since he was a boy, how could he explain that to anyone?
"Got it, got it. Don''t worry about it. I''ll handle it. You won''t be able to get up tomorrow morning anyway."
"Get lost. You might be right."
"Hehe... Leave the dishes there after you eat. I''ll come up and get them later." Richard laughed as he left.
It wasn''t that Richard was cursing Patrick. His body was just peculiar like that. Whether it was a minor or major illness, it wouldn''t go away in less than two or three days.
And it was always like he was on the brink of death, lying in bed, able to eat and sleep but unable to get up.
Patrick thought that maybe, under the power of love, a miracle might happen.
He took his medicine, ate, and soon fell asleep as the medication took effect. Just before losing consciousness, he wondered why the fever and heatstroke medicine also had the effect of cold medicine.
He didn''t do anything else all night, just kept thinking about Samue''s face.
With his chin slightly raised, staring out the car window, and smiling gently at him, it was endlessly captivating and made Patrick''s heart race uncontrollably.
After so many years, his body was out of control, and he was breathing heavily under the covers...
Damn it, having to wash his underwear first thing in the morning was so embarrassing... but it felt inexplicably good, like he hadn''t felt this way in a long time.
Heart racing, unable to control his emotions... this was what it meant to be young and full of vigor.
The only regret was that it was just a dream. If the dream could come true, it would be perfect.
By the time Patrick came out of the bathroom, it was already midday. The phone under his pillow had been ringing non-stop.
"Boss, the person you asked me to watch left the house early this morning and went to three companies: Legacy Corporation, Vision Corporation, and Noble Corporation. I think he''s looking for a job. Haha... Just got released and still dreaming of getting into these companies. Since he''s your love rival, I gave him a little ''help''."
Patrick had a bad feeling: "What?"
"Haha... I spread the word about his prison time. I bet it''ll be hard for him to find a decent job in Aurora City now. Boss, don''t you think I''m clever?"
Clever, my foot. This idiot.
"...What the... Richard, get your ass back here! Who told you to do that? Do you even know what you''ve done?"
Patrick was furious. He had never seen such a ''clever'' idiot. With that brain, he still thinks he can win Amanda... in his dreams.
Two days passed, and Samue wasn''t hired by any company, which made him very frustrated.
Does making one mistake mean you''re doomed to carry that burden for life?
He had already been punished, he had already paid for his actions, but why, why wouldn''t they forgive him?
"Mr. Scott, I came to apply for the sales assistant position yesterday... Yes, I don''t have experience, but I can learn. I''m hardworking, and I learn quickly."
"Sorry, we don''t want employees with violent tendencies, so we can''t hire you."
"Ha... Mr. Scott, you must be mistaken. I don''t have violent tendencies, I..."
"Samue, twenty-four years old, sentenced to thirteen years in prison seven years ago for intentional injury. I don''t know how you got out early, but your violent tendencies are undeniable. The person you attacked almost died..."
Samue couldn''t hear the rest of the words. His ears were buzzing, as if thousands of voices were saying, "You killed someone," "You''re a violent maniac," "You''re as cold-blooded and inhumane as your father," "You''re a madman."
"I understand. Thank you." He maintained his last bit of politeness and hung up the phone, collapsing onto the floor.
Haha... Samue, are you really done for in this life... God knows how desperate he was.
...
